5 Sustainable Containers for Packed Lunches

5 Eco Friendly Containers

In recent years, many restaurants, stores (Sparkle) and shoppers have shifted towards using products that are eco-friendlier. For lunch packers, this means ditching the single-use plastic sandwich baggies and opting for something a little bit more sustainable. Not sure what to use instead? Here’s five easy-to-use, sustainable alternatives!

Glass Lunch Containers

Made by both name and generic brands, glass containers should be the obvious alternative to plastic ones. Although a little more expensive, glass containers clean much easier and don’t harbor harmful bacteria like their plastic counterparts. To save some money, purchase these containers in a full set.

Silicone Re-Sealable Bags

To replace your regular plastic sandwich bags, opt for silicone re-sealable ones. Although more expensive at first, you’ll end up saving money in the long-term from not having to purchase new ones every few weeks. These bags seal with a durable clip and are dishwasher and microwave safe. Use them in lunches or to store food like chicken and fruit in the freezer.

Beeswax Wrap

Beeswax wrap is a pretty unique and increasingly popular product. Made from (you guessed it) beeswax, these food wraps are reusable, washable and compostable. With its natural clinging properties, you’re able to use it as an alternative to both sandwich bags and typical cling wrap. Use beeswax wrap to hold sandwiches and produce, or to cover dishes. With proper care, these wraps can last up to a year before needing replaced.

Mason Jars or Thermoses

With tightly sealed lids and all different sizes, mason jars are a super handy lunch container. Make mason jar salads ahead of time, or use them to pack meals like chicken and rice. They’re reusable, easy to clean and pretty cheap to buy. Thermoses are another convenient lunch-packing tool. Not only can you pack hot soups in them, but you can also pre-heat them ahead of time, before adding food to be eaten later at lunch. The hot thermos will keep the food warm for hours.

Biodegradable Clamshell Containers

Biodegradable take-out containers are made from compostable, natural materials and come in all shapes and sizes. These containers are an inexpensive alternative to the less eco-friendly plastic or Styrofoam containers. Use them to pack an entire lunch or keep them around the house for family cookouts – that way, people can take leftovers home!
