10 Fruits and Veggies in Season This June

June not only marks the start of summer, but also the start of a delicious fruit and veggie season! Here’s some of the produce you can expect to find fresh and in abundance at your local Sparkle this June.

Apricots

Round and yellow, apricots look like miniature peaches, but taste similar to plums. They’re high in many antioxidants like beta carotene and vitamins A, C and E, which means they help protect your body from oxidative stress. Apricots work really well with savory food like lamb and poultry, and also sweet desserts like this recipe for Fresh Apricot Bars.

Asparagus

Crunchy and fibrous, asparagus is a pretty popular spring vegetable. Not only is it high in fiber (good for digestive health), but it’s also an excellent source of folate– one of the essential nutrients for baby development. Try your asparagus in our recipe for Oven Roasted Asparagus.

Beets

Found in salads and a variety of smoothies, beets are a great source of vitamins and are actually believed to improve athletic performance. Get a hefty serving of beets in our recipe for Beet Hummus or in this recipe for a Beet Breakfast Smoothie.

Cherries

Sometimes sweet and sometimes tart, fresh cherries make for a delicious summertime snack. They contain the antioxidant anthocyanin which helps lower blood sugar levels in diabetics, along with dietary fiber that helps reduce the risk of colon cancer. Use your fresh cherries in this recipe for Summer Fruit Salad.

Cucumbers

Fun fact: Although commonly considered a vegetable, cucumbers are actually a fruit! Unsurprisingly, cucumbers are made up of 96% water, so they’re pretty effective at promoting hydration. Enjoy them in our recipe for Cucumber Hummus Wraps.

Kale

We’re sure you’ve heard this time and time again, but kale is one of the most nutrient-dense plant foods in existence. A single cup of raw kale contains more vitamin C than an orange and almost 7 times the recommended daily amount of vitamin K– an important nutrient involved in blood clotting. Try it raw in Kale Caesar Salad or cooked in Kielbasa and Kale Soup.

Plums

Firm and juicy, plums are loaded with minerals and a great source of potassium. If you have a fresh scar, eat more plums! They increase blood circulation to the scar, helping it heal faster and lessening its appearance. Try using your plums in this recipe for Grilled Pork Chops.

Raspberries

Fresh raspberries are in their peak season starting in June and are known for their high levels of vitamin C. Many studies also show that raspberries have significant anti-carcinogenic effects. Enjoy your fresh raspberries in our refreshing recipe for Peach Raspberry Lemonade or in this one for Raspberry Balsamic Glazed Salmon.

Rhubarb & Strawberries

Tart rhubarb and juicy strawberries are both in season in June, and usually enjoyed together. Rhubarb is a great source of fiber, so be careful to not eat it in too large of quantities! Strawberries, on the other hand, contain lots of antioxidants known to improve heart health. Use both to make Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp.
