Homemade Corn Dogs

The kids will fall in love with Homemade Corn Dogs for Labor Day!

Ingredients

  • 2 quarts plus 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 wooden skewers
  • Ketchup for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, add 2 quarts oil. Turn heat to medium and heat oil to 350º.
  2. In a large bowl, add cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir together. Add egg, milk, remaining 1 tablespoon oil and honey. Stir until combined; mixture will be thick.
  3. Wipe hot dogs dry with a paper towel. Insert one skewer into each hot dog. Pour the batter into a tall drinking glass. Dip each hot dog into the batter. Slowly remove and immediately place into the hot oil, while still holding the stick.
  4. Turn as necessary to brown all sides. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until all sides are golden brown. Remove from hot oil and place on paper towels to drain grease. Repeat with all hot dogs and serve warm with ketchup.
