Homemade Sloppy Joes

Everyone seems to be a bit more budget conscious lately. This meal is not only affordable to make, but you likely have most of the ingredients on hand and it’ll feed the whole family. It’s done in about 20 minutes so it’s great for busy weeknights.

Start with one pound of ground beef, half of a cup of chopped onion, half of a cup of chopped green pepper, three cloves of minced garlic, one 8 ounce can of tomato sauce, a third of a cup of ketchup, one tablespoon of brown sugar (or more to taste), one tablespoon of yellow mustard, one tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, one tablespoon of white vinegar, half of a teaspoon of salt, a fourth of a teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper, half of a teaspoon of onion powder and 4 to 6 hamburger buns.

Brown the ground beef in a large skillet, drain the extra grease, remove the ground beef, and set it aside. In that same skillet, add the onions and peppers and sauté until softened, about 3 minutes, add garlic and cook 1 minute more. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 5 to 7 minutes. Add ground beef to the sauce in the skillet and stir together and cook until all is reheated. Spoon the on to the prepared buns and serve immediately.
