Monte Cristo Sandwich
For lunch, make a Monte Cristo Sandwich. With layers of ham and cheese, dipped in raspberry preserves, this recipe is the perfect combination of salty and sweet.
Ingredients
- 6 cups vegetable oil, for frying
- 6 slices whole wheat bread, divided
- 2 slices Cheddar cheese, divided
- 6 oz. ham, divided
- 6 oz. turkey, divided
- 2 slices Swiss cheese, divided
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 cup cold water
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- Powdered sugar, for garnish
- Raspberry Sauce
- 1 (18 oz.) jar seedless raspberry jam
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
- To assemble the sandwich, layer one slice of bread, one slice Cheddar, 3 ounces ham, one slice bread, 3 ounces turkey, one slice Swiss and one slice bread. Repeat to assemble second sandwich. Slice sandwiches in half and secure with toothpicks.
- In a small bowl, mix together egg, water, flour and baking soda until smooth. Dip each sandwich half in batter until all sides are coated. Let excess batter drip off. Drop the battered sandwiches in the oil and fry each side for 2 to 3 minutes. Set on paper towels to drain. Garnish with powdered sugar and sauce below.
- Raspberry Sauce
- In a medium saucepan over low heat, heat jam and water. Stir until jam melts into a smooth sauce. Serve with sandwich.
